John 7:24 "Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment."
The NLT bible translates this verse as follows: “Look beneath the surface so you can judge correctly.” Most desire others to evaluate them based upon their intentions rather than their behavior. I must thank God every day that His view of me is not based upon appearance, but righteous judgement based upon my humble acceptance of Christ’s redemption. We are all too quick to pass judgement based upon immediate response not seeing past the behavior to the heart struggling with sin. Righteous judgement offers the same mercy and grace to others we have been given through Christ. We are not expected to over-look or excuse behavior that disregards the commands of Christ – but we must be willing to show mercy toward all mankind. Every individual must be seen as a captive of sin capable of repentance and change. This does not eliminate the consequences of action but it must offer the possibility of forgiveness. Righteous judgement does not overlook restitution – but it fully accepts true repentance.
