Matthew 5:20 "For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.
God does not simply clean up our act – He changes the very foundation of our being. God is not simply trying to make us act differently – He has provided a way for us to transform the very motive by which we live. Righteousness is not a behavior or speech – it is a condition of the heart that is developed by the Holy Spirit. Christ’s righteousness is imparted as we humbly acknowledge the Cross that we might make it the driving motive of our lives. Righteousness cannot be earned by us if we are not possessed by the grace and mercy of our Lord. I cannot build upon the purity given me by Christ – I can only eliminate the hindrance to its expression through me. My obedience to Christ does not prove my purity, it denies my sinful nature. God is not trying to improve on what I am capable of – He is reforming what I think I have to offer. I do not prove my spirituality until I acknowledge my humanity. I am not bonded to Christ unless I confess that I accept my separation from God and allow the Holy Spirit full access to my inner most desires and motives.
