In the wake of their governor signing a bill legalizing same-gender "marriage," traditionalists in the state of Washington are vowing to overturn that law through a voter initiative.

On Monday, Democratic Governor Christine Gregoire signed the legislation, making Washington the seventh in the nation to allow homosexual men and women to "wed." The law takes effect June 7 -- but opponents are planning to launch a petition drive that could potentially put the decision before voters in November.

Traditional values groups will submit the proposed language of the challenge to the secretary of state and attorney general. Those groups plan to obtain over 150,000 signatures to gain a ballot position; 121,000 valid signatures are needed. That deadline is June 6.

Val Stevens (R-Washington)State Senator Val Stevens (R) tells OneNewsNow she has already met with a group of pastors, some of whom tend to be liberal. "And those pastors came forward and said We are of one mind in this issue. This is about the family. We are standing together and we as the Christian family are going to defeat this same-sex marriage bill."

The conservative lawmaker says an active church role will be crucial, but she believes there is another reason to believe the drive will be successful.

"People are motivated," she states. "People who don't know what goes on here in Olympia are in tune. They are paying attention to this issue. This will awaken a giant that has been asleep for too long."

Stevens says she is counting on those individuals to be volunteers and to be messengers in encouraging friends, co-workers, and others to vote in favor of reversing the homosexual marriage law.

The Washington state House approved the "gay marriage" legislation 55-43; the Senate did likewise on a 28-21 vote. Democrats control both houses.
