For first time in seven years, UN condemns terror against Israel

For the first time in seven years, the U.N. Security Council strongly condemned terrorist attacks aimed at Israel, referring to the attempted attack in Georgia and the bombing in New Delhi which wounded Tal Koren-Yehoshua, the wife of an Israeli diplomat, as well as her driver.

The Security Council released a statement late Thursday saying that “any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable regardless of their motivations, whenever and by whomsoever committed.”

Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Ron Prosor, who had urged the council to condemn the terrorist acts, welcomed the statement, saying, “After seven years of silence, the Council has finally spoken against the terrorism that the Israeli people face every day.”

Another U.N. first for Israel occurred earlier this month when it was accepted into the executive board of the United Nations Development Program, allowing Israel to take full part in discussions on allocating U.N. resources in developing countries.

These firsts follow years of systematic U.N. hostility toward the Jewish state.

Last December, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice, speaking at an event for the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations, said, “The United Nations’ daily treatment of Israel is merciless, ugly, and obsessive,” adding, “I hope we never let our justified frustration over the treatment of Israel blind us to the ways in which the U.N. is vital to our security and our values.”

The manner in which the U.N. responds to Israel, Rice said, is “bad for the U.N., bad for the peace process - and must come to an end.”

She pledged that the Obama administration would “continue to lead, to pursue our interests and our values, and to stick up for fair treatment for Israel.”

According to the Israeli delegation’s U.N. website page, “no other Member State of the United Nations - even those that systematically deny their citizens the most basic freedoms - faces such a litany of one-sided resolutions. This fact reflects the sad reality that the condemnatory resolutions against Israel are a political tool used to promote a narrow, hateful agenda.”

The delegation’s mission statement went on to say, “Aside from the robotic institutional framework within the General Assembly against Israel, other U.N. bodies and organs obsessively target Israel, as well. The Geneva-based U.N. Human Rights Council is yet another glaring example. Designed to replace the now-defunct Commission on Human Rights … the Council targets Israel in a relentless fashion while rogue states and regimes that systematically abuse human rights are never mentioned. The Council’s only country-specific agenda item focuses solely on Israel while its mandates and ‘fact finding’ missions predetermine Israel’s culpability. The Human Rights Council has, in fact, passed more resolutions against Israel than all other countries -– combined.”
