SIMPLE TRUST IN JESUS
MY dear daughter has been confined to her bed for six months,
and to her sick room for eighteen months. On Thursday, the 19th of August, I
entered her sick room, as is my wont, to convene and pray.
I
mentioned the case of a person who had long struggled with doubts, fears, and
anxieties, by "trying himself to realize the promises," but was
exhorted to cease "trying to realize," and simply rest on Jesus by
faith: He did so, and then the Holy Spirit filled his heart with holy peace and
joy, and then he realized the promises.
"Father," said she, "that is
just my case. I am always trying to realize the promises myself. I see my
error." I prayed by her side. God was gracious.
The
next day she exclaimed, "Oh, dear father, I rest on Jesus, and He fills my
soul with sweet peace. Living or dying I am His."
The
next day, though still heavily afflicted, she said, with a sweet smile,
"Father, I am still trusting, and have sweet peace."
Oh, if Christians would but cease
attempting to realise for themselves, and rest on Jesus, the Holy Spirit would
fill them with peace, and joy, and inward strength!
