As the world tuned to the opening ceremony of the 1994 winter Olympics, a multitude of surprises filled the night air in Lillehammer. Could these staged marvels be linked to today's revival of pagan spirituality? 1996. Atlanta, USA. The Olympic Dream: A Renaissance of Unholy Oneness: The spirit behind Zeus, the ancient god of the Olympics, would have been pleased. Never has so large a flock sung his hymn and cheered his sacred flame. Never have so many people celebrated a timeless ritual involving earth-centered spirits and the "tribes" they inspire. And never have so many international heroes been idolized for their physical prowess, regardless of moral character.
       Never have so many nations cheered the dream of global oneness. Awaiting a spiritual and physical renaissance "powerful enough to unite the world,"1 the Olympic dream was born in 1896 when Frenchman Pierre deCoubertin revived the ancient Olympic games. Now, on its 100th birthday, the dream burns stronger than ever, fueled by wishful thinking, globalist propaganda, and the utopian ambitions of the United Nations.

2002. Salt Lake City, USA. Olympic Spirits and Global Illusions: Few celebrations match the UN vision of a global acropolis better than the spectacular tribute to unity that opens the Olympic games. Summer and winter -- each two years -- the ceremony changes. But the popular message and the planned illusion remains the same: we are one world, one spirit, one people. Year 2002 serves this rising tradition well. In Salt Lake City, on February 8, a crowd of 52,000 welcomed 2,318 athletes from 77 nations. The foreign[3] dignitaries included UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, one of many global managers with a major stake in the universal appeal of the Olympic vision.

2004. Norway. The Greek Olympics: From mythical dreams to sobering realities: Like the mystical god of Huxley's Brave New World, the universal god described in the Olympic Hymn was designed to unify all people -- and offend none. But to the Greek hosts of the 2004 games, this illusion of truth and goodness must have sounded a bit hollow on opening day. Although they had built their magnificent structures dedicated to the dream of Olympic glory, worldwide peace and human perfection, their facade would soon be shattered.

2006. Greece. Olympic gods and C. S. Lewis: "During the ancient Olympic Games in Greece, a sacred flame burned at the altar of Zeus, in whose honor the Games were held. ... Women dressed in robes similar to those worn by the ancient Greeks use a curved mirror to light the torch naturally with rays of the sun. The high priestess then presents the torch to the first relay runner."
     C. S. Lewis would have loved the Olympics. Its roots sank deep into the ancient mythology that had captivated his heart. Long after he began to study the Bible and joined the Anglican church (1931), he continued to justify pagan myths as precursor to the Gospel. In his imagination-rich mind, he believed that "Christianity fulfilled paganism,"[2] for the two were simply a continuous thread of the same evolving story. Lewis' description of his visit to Greece in 1960 fits that persuasion:

"I had some ado to prevent Joy and myself from relapsing into Paganism in Attica! At Daphni it was hard not to pray to Apollo the Healer. But somehow one didn’t feel it would have been very wrong — would have only been addressing Christ sub specie Apollonius."[2] See footnote here

London: London 2012 Olympics: The Staging Ground for the Coming Police State?  "It’s what the Romans used to refer to as 'bread and circuses'—the idea that the key to controlling the masses is by satiating their carnal appetites and entertaining them with mindless distraction.       "'As a metaphor for the London Olympics, it could hardly be more stark,' writes Stephen Graham for the Guardian. 'For £10.25 you, too, can own the ultimate symbol of the Games: a member of by far the biggest and most expensive security operation in recent British history packaged as tourist commodity.'...There’s even a security patrol tasked with making sure that local businesses observe the government ban on symbols and words relating to the Olympics lest they cause economic harm to the 'official' corporate sponsors.... These purple-capped government officials are authorized to enter businesses to look for violations, and can impose fines up to 20,000 pounds ($31,000).
      "Included on the banned list are such words as games, 2012, gold, silver, bronze, summer, sponsors, and London. ....An old lady got tagged for sewing the five rings onto a mini doll sweater.'....Unfortunately for the people of London and beyond, the UK’s willingness to host the 2012 Summer Olympics has turned this exercise in solidarity, teamwork and nationalism into a $17 billion exercise in militarism, corporatism, surveillance and oppression."

I (Berit) didn't see it, but here is a comment that was sent to me:

"They put John Lennon up on the big screen, remastered and straight from Yoko Ono's archives, singing about how we should "Imagine all the people living life in peace." Blue light bathed Olympic Stadium, and it was picture-perfect stagecraft for an organization that wants people to believe, above all else, that the games are about the world coming together and putting aside differences." — Ted Anthony

Indeed it is! And these days, the most despised "difference" is Biblical Christianity! John Lennon described the world's hatred for our Lord and His Word quite clearly. But, remember, Lennon's hope is based on the wishful human imagination, not on reality:

Imagine there's no heaven. It's easy if you try

No hell below us; above us only sky

Imagine all the people; living for today.

Imagine there's no countries. It isn't hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too

Imagine all the people, living life in peace.

Imagine no possessions. I wonder if you can

No need for greed or hunger -- A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people, sharing all the world.

You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one

I hope someday you'll join us, and the world will live as one.

What an illusion! Yes, John Lennon　certainly is a dreamer, and his dream is totally irrational. Mankind has never lived together in peace apart from Jesus Christ. History has shown us again and again that our human nature (without God's truth and love) stirs envy, conflict, hatred, cruelty and wars. In that context only tyrants can control the masses.
Our sovereign King offers His people something far better in this earthly life: His love, comfort, strength and hope. And that God-given hope will be fulfilled when He welcomes us into His glorious eternity.
As the world marches onward toward a totalitarian world system, we are likely to face loss, hatred, persecution and suffering. After all, Jesus has called us to share in His suffering. But with the suffering comes an ever sufficient supply of strength, endurance and joy in Him!

"Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ...in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:35-39
