Galatians 5:1 ¶ Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
Our freedom and liberty must be submitted to the sovereign lordship and will of Christ. True freedom comes from knowing our limitations, acknowledging our weakness and submitting our purpose as defined by God’s Word – bondage comes from our desire to do our own thing. Freedom in Christ has less to do with behavior and everything to do with our access to God and His promise. Bondage is not the restriction of where I go or what I do – it is the barrier of my sin-nature that challenges me to focus upon personal desire and ambition. Every free society restricts the behavior of its citizens through social and civil laws. Man’s sin-nature may well observe the laws of the land and totally disregard God’s spiritual law – because the view of freedom is regulated by selfish ambition. Our true freedom and the contentment it will bring comes from Christ alone through His Holy Spirit as he transforms our thinking to align us with God’s eternal purpose. Liberty is not the right to do what I want; it is the privilege and purpose to discover what our Lord has promised. Liberty in Christ brings us the pleasure of God and desire to seek His approval. Our liberty was purchased and provided by Jesus Christ – the exercise of that liberty is allowed to transform our will to simply do what God has purposed – this is the ultimate of man’s liberty and contentment.
