Equipping Citizens to Protect Themselves

My letter to the editor of the Rapid City Journal today:
A constitutional carry bill has been introduced again in the legislature this year, this time by Rep. Lance Russell of Hot Springs and Senator Ernie Otten of Tea.
With shootings by lawless individuals who care as little for the value of innocent human life as they do “gun free zones” and other laws, it is more important than ever that law-abiding citizens be equipped to protect themselves and those they care about.
Those who value our Second Amendment rights may recall that last year a constitutional carry bill was introduced by Rep. Don Kopp, only to have it shot down in committee by “Republicans” like Rep. Brian Gosch who were more interested in punishing conservativesthey didn’t like than in voting for a good bill that reflects Republican values.
After the whipping the RINOs took at the ballot box in last year’s primary, we can only hope that these liberal “Republicans” have learned their lesson and will choose to behave like grownup Republicans rather than petulant “moderates.”
The rights and well being of South Dakotans depend on our leaders’ ability to live up to the values with which they have aligned themselves in order to get elected.
Note: I had expected this bill to be introduced to the legislature by now, but it is still pending.
