Psalms 23:2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.
We have all suffered the turmoil and pressure this world bombards us with on a regular basis – thinking our only place of quietness will be found in a full resolution of our problems. The rest our Shepherd is offering is not the cessation of turmoil but the assured confidence that He is in complete control. (Ps 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God.) Stillness and calm are not subject to my circumstances – they are the result of my faith and trust. I surrender my calm by focusing upon my turmoil or expectations for relief. Lying down in a green pasture is knowing that God will provide all I need and watch over me. I have heard that sheep will not approach turbulent waters to quench their thirst – in Christ we have the calmness of still waters to satisfy our thirst for righteousness. The world is a turbulent place offering endless opportunity to satisfy our longing for happiness – unfortunately we find ourselves dis-satisfied, frustrated and dismayed. True contentment is found only in God’s eternal Word and promise.
