Hillary Clinton Refuses Meeting With Local Police, Sits Down With Black Lives Matter

With just two weeks to go until Election Day, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has limited her public appearance schedule to just a handful of events in key swing states. When she does get in front of a crowd, as she did in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday, she vows to be “every American’s president” and speaks of her “unifying vision, bringing us together, not tearing us apart.”
Privately, however, the candidate has been anything but inclusive. During her trip to northeast Ohio, Clinton made time to meet with local Black Lives Matter activists DeRay Mckesson and Brittany Packnett (the latter of whom recently endorsed the Democrat). A Clinton campaign aide told the Associated Press on Friday that they planned to discuss how to “advance equity and opportunity in the African-American community.”
Blue Lives Matter reports that local law enforcement officials had reached out to the Clinton campaign about also getting some time with the candidate, but their efforts were rebuffed. In a statement released via the Trump campaign, the president of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, Steve Loomis, criticized the Democratic nominee for not giving equal time to BLM and police.
“Hillary Clinton shows where her priorities lie when she meets with radicals from Black Lives Matters but refuses requests to meet with our local police officers here in Cleveland, Ohio, and the nation,” he said. “By accepting an endorsement from this racially exclusive and divisive group that encourages attacks against police officers, she sets back our efforts to restore trust with the law-abiding citizens we serve in our communities. The result of Hillary Clinton's decision to fuel animosity against police is that cops will stop proactively policing in the neighborhoods where their presence is needed the most. The law-abiding citizens will continue to suffer and the only ones who will benefit will be those who continue to victimize them.”
Earlier this month, the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association voted, for the first time in its history, to endorse a candidate for president. In a lopsided 216-68 tally, the organization voted in favor of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
