Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) on Sunday accused FBI Director James Comey of possibly violating federal law when he informed Congress that the agency was looking at new potential evidence in its investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server.
Comey on Friday made the announcement, against the advice of Attorney General Loretta Lynch and the Justice Department, and just 11 days before the presidential election. Lynch reportedly urged him to wait until after the election, which she said is consistent with an official DOJ policy against taking actions that could influence elections.
In a scathing letter to Comey, Reid alleged the disclosure may have violated the Hatch Act:
“I am writing to inform you that my office has determined that these actions may violate the Hatch Act, which bars FBI officials from using their official authority to influence an election. Through your partisan actions, you may have broken the law.”
However, Reid also unloaded another major allegation in his letter — one about Donald Trump and his alleged ties to Russia:
“In my communications with you and other top officials in the national security community, it has become clear that you possess explosive information about close ties and coordination between Donald Trump, his top advisors, and the Russia government - a foreign interest openly hostile to the United States, which Trump praises at every opportunity. The public has a right to know this information. I wrote to you months ago calling for this information to be released to the public. There is no danger to American interests from releasing it. And yet, you continue to resist calls to inform the public of this critical information.”
Despite criticizing the FBI director for releasing information that could damage the Clinton campaign, he seemed fine with Comey disclosing details that would hurt Trump. Read the full letter below:

Reid's closing statement was extra harsh.

The FBI is reportedly in the process of examining tens-of-thousands of potentially relevant emails found on a laptop shared by top Clinton aide Huma Abedin and her estranged husband, Anthony Weiner. The discovery was apparently made inadvertently during a separate investigation into Weiner's latest sexting scandal.
Comey said he decided to disclose the new potential evidence to Congress because he had testified to lawmakers that the investigation into Clinton's controversial private email use as secretary of state had concluded. In a letter to FBI employees, Comey acknowledged the “significant risk” of of his decision being “misunderstood.” He also said it's unclear if the emails will produce any major revelations.
