On Monday, President-elect Donald J. Trump tweeted a message to North Korea, challenging the country’s latest threats about their nuclear weapon capabilities. In a televised New Years message on Sunday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un praised his nation’s military and said that they’re close to testing long-range missiles that would be capable of hitting the United States. Upon hearing the Korean leader’s remarks, Trump rebutted “it won’t happen!”

“North Korea just stated that it is in the final stages of developing a nuclear weapon capable of reaching parts of the U.S. It won’t happen!” Trump tweeted Monday evening.

The President-elect also had criticism of China, who he said wouldn’t help the U.S. against North Korea.

“China has been taking out massive amounts of money & wealth from the U.S. in totally one-sided trade, but won’t help with North Korea. Nice!” he tweeted, about 40 minutes after his previous tweet.

During his Sunday statement, Kim Jong Un was addressing the North Korean people as well the United States as he touted the strength of their military. The North Korean leader said that his country was now a “military power of the East that cannot be touched by even the strongest enemy” that was in its “last stage” of developing intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of hitting the United States.

“Research and development of cutting edge arms equipment is actively progressing and ICBM (inter-continental ballistic missile) rocket test launch preparation is in its last stage,” Kim Jong Un said.

North Korea has conducted two nuclear tests in the past year, including the largest it’s ever conducted, raising fears that their nuclear capabilities have been increasing. However, none of the test missiles have never been successfully fired.
