Assad in trouble: Syrian Rebels nearing the Presidential Palace
After more than four years of brutal fighting and more than 200,000 casualties, the Assad regime may be on the verge of defeat, as Syrian Rebel forces that includes Islamic State terrorists is nearing the Presidential Palace in Damascus.

The recent achievements of the Syrian Rebels and Islamic State terrorists in Syria may mark the toughest challenge thus far for the Syrian Armed Forces since the start of the deadly civil war in the country four years ago. In parallel to the Rebels’ success in the north, south and east, Assad’s military strength is being exhausted and his ability to deal with the threats facing his regime is becoming more and more limited.
Assad has in practice lost his ability to transfer military forces from area to area and these forces have suffered heavy losses. The Shiite militias sent by Iran from Iraq and Afghanistan to help the Syrian Army have not proven their fighting capabilities, while Hezbollah has not been able to make any real progress in its tough battles in the area of the Qalamoun Mountains.
The Syrian Army is now battling on five fronts– an Islamic State attack on the city of Al-Hasakah in the north, attacks by the Syrian Rebels and Islamic State terrorists on the city of Aleppo, a Syrian Rebel attack on the capital city of the Syrian Revolution in Homs, an Islamic State attack on Jabal al-Druze in southern Syria and an extensive attack on the city of Daraa near the border with Jordan.
The Syrian President will soon have to decide how his forces will proceed. According to some reports, the Syrian leadership has already begun planning a move to assemble all its forces in several notable strongholds in Western Syria.
Earlier today, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani reiterated his country’s unconditional support for Assad. “Iran will stand behind the Syrian people and regime till the end,” Rouhani stated in a meeting in Teheran with the Chairman of the Syrian Parliament, the last in a series of meetings between senior level Iranian and Syrian officials as part of the close cooperation between the two countries.
