It may surprise you to know that there are roughly 2.2 million adults in the United States who are imprisoned – that’s one out of every hundred people. The second highest country is Cuba, and their numbers certainly do not compare – not even a little bit.
The Prison Policy Initiative created a list of every single country, breaking down each state in America as if they were individual countries themselves. The results were somewhat depressing. Why? Because America’s numbers far surpassed all others. In fact, as noted by IJReview, 36 U.S. states have a higher incarceration rate than any other country on the globe.

It’s hard to say whether this is good news or bad. However, further research based on these findings may be an excellent start to understanding what this chart really means.
