James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.
Humility is not to be viewed as a negative posture. Humility is the primary ingredient in our desire to glorify our God. Humility does not suppress confidence – the one humble before our sovereign God is confident and secure in their life and hope because they can rest in the wondrous promise and majesty of their loving God. Humility reminds us that a wholesome reverent fear of God is necessary to guide our lives. Humility before God keeps me vigilant and listening to the Holy Spirit. Humility before God helps me to keep the proper motive and purpose toward the grace and mercy of God. Humility before God should be translated as willing obedience before man. Humility before God will never look to man for approval or recognition. Humility before God holds its exaltation secure in the promise God has given every believer. The world, our flesh and Satan are at war against humility by the subtle prompting of ego, pride and personal liberties. Christianity is preserved and promoted by those who not only give-up their rights but who are willing to give up their lives for the glory of God. Humility is not compromise – it is steadfast confidence in the sovereignty of God.
