Psalms 40:8 I delight to do Your will, O my God, And Your law is within my heart."
The Ten Commandments should be honored, pursued and preached – not for reconciliation but as a standard of behavior – they ever remain a challenge to our sinful nature. They command the reverent fear of God and require us to respect and esteem our fellow man. Many have diluted their understanding of holiness by viewing God’s Ten Commandments as legalistic requirements having little application to modern Christianity. The commands of God are not rules to be applied – they are principles to be manifest. They are clear guidelines to expose the weakness of our flesh and the inherent rebellion of our sin-nature – they are not given to simply limit our choices, they are to inspire our devotion. If we allow ourselves to believe that Christ’s sacrifice fulfilled all personal obligation to the law we produce the freedom to personally define social and moral behavior. The Ten Commandments were not abolished along with animal sacrifice – Christ’s delivery of the Sermon on the Mount demands a greater challenge to devotion and obedience than was presented by Moses. The law was never intended to produce holiness – it simply exposes our failure to live in such a way that satisfies it requirements. I am to be challenged by the Law to humble me before God that I might see the weakness of my flesh and allow the Holy Spirit to deal with my sin-nature. God does not reveal our weakness to inspire our sacrifice – but to direct our devotion, to stimulate our dependence and make known His wondrous grace and mercy.
