Have you ever thought of the implications of John 15:16, where Jesus said, “You did not choose me, but I chose you.” We were chosen by God.
That can feel like a scary thing, because we frankly don’t feel all that worthy all the time. (At least I sure don’t.) So why did God choose us? I’ve been reading about God’s chosen people in the Old Testament, and I think it sheds a little extra light on the situation.
1. Because of His mercy and for His glory.
First of all, God chose us because He is good, not because we are. We didn’t earn His choosing, but He chose us out of His infinite love. And to be honest, we even bring Him glory when we don’t deserve His love.
Love isn’t glorious if it’s earned. It’s only impressive when it’s unmerited. Not to say we should make ourselves as unlovable as possible, but we can relax knowing that God will get glory because of His love for us – not because of our performance.
2. To be a blessing to others.
Something the Israelites frequently forgot in the Old Testament was why they were chosen. They weren’t chosen because they were the best. They were chosen because God planned to do something awesome through them that would bless everyone else. Ultimately, that was Jesus being born, making salvation possible no matter what your bloodline.
Our job is similar. Jesus might have not come from my family lineage, but I can bring Him to the world in my own way. I can share what He did for humanity and what He did for me, thereby being a blessing to others. We weren’t chosen because we were special; we were chosen because God wanted to bring Jesus to the world through us.
3. To love one another.
Finally, God chose us to bear lasting fruit that will abide. It’s right there at the end of John 15:16. And what is fruit? The fruit of the spirit is love…
And greater love has no one than this, that a man would lay his life down for his friends. Our job is to lay down our lives for others so that, in doing so, we could be a blessing to others and give God glory.
Being a Christian doesn’t make you special. It makes you a servant. That’s why God chose you. He chose you because He wanted you to partner with Him to accomplish the greatest task of all – bring His love, hope, and peace to the world.
Let’s be willing to lay down our rights – lay down our “specialness” – and do just that.
