Lieutenant General William "Jerry" Boykin at Family Research Council 5 hrs · Washington, DC ·

The current situation in Israel is the most serious situation that we have seen there in at least the past eight years. It may be the most serious situation there since the Yom Kipper War of 1973, when Israel was attacked on all sides during the Holy celebration. This could result in a major ground offensive into the Gaza strip that could go on for months as the IDF attempts to decapitate the Hamas military components. Please consider the following:
1) Hamas is both a political and a military organization that was elected in 2006 to govern the Gaza area. It governs Gaza today while FATAH governs the West Bank Palestinian settlements. The two Palestinian areas have been at odds for years and have seen little to no agreement between them on the future of the Palestinian Territories. Although they claim to have formed a "Unity Government" in order to negotiate a peace with Israel, it is just a sham since Hamas has not ever recognized the right for Israel to exist. How can there be any negotiations if one side refuses to recognize the sovereignty of the other?
2) Hamas has thousands of missiles and rockets to use against Israel. Some of the newer missiles have the range to reach Jerusalem ad the interior regions of Israel including Tel Aviv. Over 400 rockets and missiles have been fired at Israel in the past 4 days. During the most intense periods of attack, there was a rocket or missile hitting Israel or being intercepted by the Israeli Iron Dome system about every 10 minutes. Israelis in the South of Israel have about 15 seconds to find cover when missiles are in-bound according to the Deputy Defense Minister, Danny Danon. The IDF has circulated a viral video showing that not even Usain Bolt could not make it safely to a bomb shelter in 15 seconds (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qs1R5RAC02c)
3) Israel really cannot wipe out Hamas since it is a political entity as well as a para-military unit. What they can do is deal a devastating blow to the war-making capabilities of Hamas. But in order to do that, they will need to go into Gaza on the ground. Their objectives would be to a. destroy arms stockpiles, b. kill the leadership, c. destroy military equipment and fighters in Gaza, and finally, d. damage the morale of the Hamas supporters, making them question whether they should find an alternative path for the future.
4) A ground war will be costly and could precipitate a larger war in south Lebanon against Hezbollah. Yes, Hezbollah is Shia and Hamas is Sunni but they will work together against Israel. In fact, many of the rockets that Hamas has came from Iran, so do not think that Sunnis and Shias will not work together.
I will post more tomorrow to provide more details on the situation. If you believe in prayer as I do, then pray for the nation of Israel and the non-combatants, both Jews and the Arabs, during this conflict.
