Successful 6th Grade Students Shamed by Reporter

FOX 5 School Dance Drama
America used to be a country where excellence was celebrated. We encouraged our children to not only achieve success, but also to challenge themselves to do so. In a school setting, children are placed in the environment that best fits their needs. Some are in the gifted and talented program, some are in the general classroom, while others are in Special Education. Even those within Special Education have a variety of ways in which their educational needs are addressed. Each student within the Special Education program has what is known as an IEP, or an Individualized Education Program. Their assignments are written to take into account their special needs with Resource teachers available to assist those in the general classroom.
The point is students are given every opportunity to achieve success, no matter what their ability. Whether they take advantage of it is up to them.
But, in a society in which increasingly success has almost become a dirty word and mediocrity is pushed as acceptable, it should come as no surprise that a school has come under attack for daring to have an ‘honor celebration of school achievement’. (video below) Eastern Middle School in Silver Spring, MD had a party for students, but not all could attend. Those students with straight A’s were able to leave during the final period for a party consisting of pizza, drinks, fun, and games. Those students with A’s, B’s, and C’s were able to attend the party, but only after school was over and there was no pizza served at that time.
To watch FOX 5, the local FOX affiliate in the DC area, report on this party, one would think some criminal activity had taken place. But, the only ‘crime’ committed was achieving success and daring to reward it.
It was supposed to be an honor celebration of school achievement, but apparently, the best part of the party at a Montgomery County Middle School was only for straight A students. Well, parents are upset that some other students were excluded from that party. Fox 5’s Karen Gray Houston is just back from Silver Spring with all the details. Karen.
Hey Shawn. Straight-A students at Eastern Middle School were invited to a party. It started during 7th period and that’s the final period of the day. Well, students who got A’s, B’s, and C’s could come later AFTER the pizza was served and, if your grades were not up to snuff, you didn’t even get an invitation at all.
Speaking of not getting an invitation, we were not allowed inside for the party at Eastern Middle School either.  So, we know a little about what it’s like to be left out.
The antagonistic, anti-success news reporting got worse when the reporter, Karen Gray Houston, shamed the straight A students interviewed. Initially, the students were excited and proud of their accomplishment. But, in true activist media form, Houston had to ask innocent, high achieving 6th graders if they thought it was fair. And we wonder why we have a generation of people who believe that socialism is good, success is selfish, and profit is a dirty word. Shame on FOX 5.
