Just as the conviction of sin, whether individual sins, or of our sins as a whole, led up to the insight that they were not, as we had thought, the mere result of weakness, but as sin of unbelief, the rejection of Christ in not accepting his deliverance, so this will be still more the case when the Holy Spirit convicts God’s children of sin in preparation for revival.
Things that have been tolerated, as if they were a necessity owing to our weakness, things that we have become so accustomed to that we hardly notice them, will be revealed as sin because they prove that we have not allowed him to work in us what he would.
As the ignorance of the Jews of him whom they had crucified was not counted as an excuse for their sin, our ignorance and weakness will not avail in the burning searching of the Holy Spirit. Sin will be seen and felt to be a proof that Christ is not fully accepted as prince and saviour, that the surrender to his will and the trust in his grace has not been whole-hearted.
It is the measure of our surrender to Christ to be freed from sinning that is the measure of our sense of sin. The determination at all costs to be kept from sinning is the proof of our hatred of it. The deepening sense of sin will manifest itself in the intensity of our clinging to him who delivers from it.
