"It's been the effort of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, of which I am a member, to begin re-informing the citizens of our country that it is okay to pray, it is okay to have religious action take place and, in fact, it goes back to the founding and framework of our country itself," Walberg tells OneNewsNow.
He cites a U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Marsh v. Chambers, that deliberative public bodies are allowed to pray.
"This is not an issue of school prayer, it's an issue of a fact that a school board -- like the legislature or Congress or the Supreme Court; a deliberative body making decisions that have the force of law -- should be, if they desire -- not mandated, but if they desire, and the community supports it -- that they should be able to open in prayer," the Republican lawmaker contends.
The resolution has 33 cosponsors, and Walberg is hoping for many more.
