I applaud leaks that expose Barack Obama’s extralegal and unconstitutional actions. By what unilateral authority does Obama conduct drone attacks in at least three foreign nations? By what unilateral authority does Obama declare that all military-age males in so-called “strike zones” are fair game for remote-controlled extermination? This includes American citizen “suspects.” By what unilateral authority has Obama launched more than 250 armed drone attacks since January 2009, attacks that have no doubt killed scores of women and children as well?
In Obama’s first ordered drone strike in Yemen, dozens of women and children were blown up. Surely, by now, the body count of innocents of all ages would qualify Obama, in the character of a unilateral bomber, as both mass murderer and war criminal.
After getting elected by promising openness in government, protection of civil liberties and ending wars, Obama has turned into an Orwellian poster boy for an omniscient national security state and extralegal death and destruction. (In reference to the former, the Obama administration is building the “Utah Data Center,” a mammoth NSA facility designed to capture and store all electronic transactions and communications – phone calls, emails, credit card purchases, travel data, banking transactions, Internet searches, traffic tickets, etc – all without warrant or court order.) What happened? There are at least three obvious possibilities: 1) Obama is a sociopath with unrestrainable criminal inclinations, 2) Obama has been compromised by nefarious elements of government or 3) both 1 and 2.
To be sure, an unvetted president – especially one who conceals, conflates and obfuscates his background – is a ripe plum for blackmail by powerful interests, domestic or foreign. The founders feared such a scenario. Therefore, to better the chances of a president with undivided loyalty, the Constitution requires that the president and vice president must be “natural born” citizens, a strict condition of birth that pertains only to presidential and vice-presidential aspirants – not to any other seekers of federal office.
Whether one figures Obama as a pliable lackey for a sinister shadow government or a self-contained menace, his presidency is a disaster of Titanic proportions. Democrats who retain a modicum of free will and self-respect are deserting the sinking Obama ship in growing numbers. Maybe that says it all.
