Ps 119:143-144 ¶ Trouble and anguish have overtaken me, Yet Your commandments are my delights. The righteousness of Your testimonies is everlasting; Give me understanding, and I shall live.
It is not possible to live in this world and not experience times of trouble and anguish – periodically there are times when they seem unbearable. The more credence we give to our expectation or our sense of human fairness the more susceptible we are to disappointment and anguish. We have very little control over the circumstances of this life, but we are in direct control of our willingness to delight in the commandments of God. The righteousness (rightness) of God’s ways are not subject to my emotional well-being or immediate understanding – they are eternally true to His majestic sovereign purpose. God will grant my plea for understanding if I will set aside personal ambition and embrace my faith in His eternal will for my life. God will use the trouble and anguish in my life to increase my understanding of His grace, mercy and love. Our vow of obedience to God is tried and refined in the fiery furnace of testing – not to punish but to strengthen. To strengthen our devotion to God our personal comfort will often be met with resistance.
Read through the Bible in one year – Feb. 11 – Matt 26:1-25; Lev. 11-12
